I have mixed feelings about rec pages. There's this argument that goes something like, "Writers are sensitive souls. Rec sites are elitist and hurt feelings and damage the self-esteem of writers. If you're a true fan looking for fic, you'd read all of the fic on the archive anyway." That's writer ego talk.

But there are also rec pages that boast they 'filter out the crap' and 'unearth the gems'...and well, that's laughable. That's reccer ego talk.

Rec sites are biased by their very nature. I list these stories here so I can find and read them again. It's as simple as that. And yeah, I rec people I know. I even rec fic on this domain. Hey, someone has to!

Note that I also rec works-in-progress, and label them as such. Even incomplete fic has value. Think of them like snapshots in a potential universe, moments during a journey. It can be just as fun as the final destination.

ST:TOS - Star Trek: The Original Series

Turning Point and Full Circle by Killashandra
Kirk and Spock face separation after the end of the five-year mission. Kirk seeks refuge in a one night stand, and a willing Spock has to fight his desire to initiate a bonding mindlink. This was the K/S story that converted me from slash skeptic to slash fan. This was the story that made me *believe*. Yes, the prose is purple and lush and overflowing with adjectives. But the set-up is believable, and there is this slow burning buildup to the sex. Killa draws out the tension almost to breaking point. I love it.

Twenty Questions by T.Jonesy
Kirk and Spock play a little game, with some very slashy and funny banter. Read and be amazed at how much can be conveyed by pure dialogue.

Talk Dirty To Me and A Twice-Told Tale by Jungle Kitty
In Talk Dirty, a X-rated chat show take a call from a certain Captain and First Officer. Irreverent, rude and raunchy, and the two female hosts almost steal the show. Twice-told is much more romantic and sweet, as Kirk tells a fairy tale and Spock starts interrogating him about the details. The inspiration for my MfU Dialogue Series.

Small Packages by T.Jonesy
Simply hilarious. Slashy, but no sex, and it doesn't matter one bit because it is so laugh-out loud funny. McCoy plays a mean trick on Kirk and Spock, with silly consequences for all. Think of the Tribble ep, and multiply the absurdity by ten. Great fun. T.Jonesy is one of the funniest fan writers I know.

Unspoken Truth and Any Other Lifetime by Kathy Dailey.
Two gen/het novels detailing the relationship between Spock and the female Romulan Commander in Enterprise Incident. The first story takes place after the ep itself, the second during the TNG ep Unification. I didn't expect to be drawn in, but these stories are incredibly engrossing. The details of the ship, the diplomatic negotiations...bit by bit the reader is immersed into the Commander's point of view and it WORKS. It was so involving that I stopped wondering if anyone would have sex (they do, but you have to wait a while). May be too long to read onscreen.

MfU - Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Z-48 by Jane Terry
As an up-and-coming agent, Napoleon is confronted with a challenging assignment - going undercover as an 'escort' to a male Thrush agent. He undertakes initial training with a supportive U.N.C.L.E. agent, but when the other man is injured, Napoleon has to find someone else who is willing to help him practise. Maybe his friend, a certain nerdy Russian scientist, could offer assistance...and much, much more. What could be a sordid and angst-ridden scenario is lightened by moments of humour and friendship, some fun original characters, Napoleon's own droll perspective and some delicious slashy sizzle. Through his eyes, we are given insights into the motivations and personal sacrifices involved in being an U.N.C.L.E. agent.

Dishevelled by Julia Justina
A Russian mercenary working for Thrush questions his loyalties after guarding a prisoner from U.N.C.L.E. - one charming and dishevelled Napoleon Solo. This first-person story is devious, surprising, funny and moving...much like the mischievous Illya.

The Only on the Holidays Affair by Rosemary Callahan
A wonderful story spanning three Christmases in which we see the progression of the relationship between Napoleon and Illya from friends to lovers. Very warm and tender and inspiring. These characters may lack the simmering rivalry of the canonical characters, but it's impossible not to be charmed by Ro's portrayal. This story played a major part in influencing my own perspective on Napoleon Solo - Callahan makes him so kind and generous that I almost wanted him for myself by the end of the story. Hands off, Illya! He's mine!

The Arctic Nights Affair by Rosemary Callahan
Classic hurt/comfort slash at its best. Trapped training male recruits in U.N.C.L.E.'s arctic training base, Illya offers Napoleon an outlet for his sexual frustration while indulging his own hidden feelings for his partner. But Napoleon's warmth and generosity leads to greater intimacy...and the prospect of further heartbreak for Illya when their mission ends. This is an unashamed love story that taps into the vulnerable Illya/caring Napoleon characterisations but still retains the humour and wit of the agents we remember.

The Remembrance of Things Past Affair by Mona Ramsey (archived on Wayback Machine)
Mona Ramsey was one of the first to put MfU slash fanfic online. Her series is light and witty and fun, much like the series I remembered. This was my favourite of her fanfics, an established-relationship story in which Napoleon has amnesia, and Illya realises his feelings for the partner he's lost.

Phoenix by Shay Sheridan
A great story with a near perfect blending of UNCLE canon with slash, and a dash of reality that does NOT overwhelm the plotline to the exclusion of all else. The characters are warm and passionate, but retain their teeth - there are tense arguments that provide some delicious sizzle - but they retain their charm and humour and intelligence, and skirt the edge of fanon stereotypes without ever falling in. The angst in this story flows from character and past history, and the seeds of it are sown skilfully at the start. Waverly's role is small, yet pivotal. If you've ever wondered if Napoleon might ever be seriously interested in Angelique, let this story put your mind at rest. If you only read one MfU slash story in your life, read this. Plotline: Illya grapples with unfamiliar emotions after a tense assignment. When Napoleon visits his apartment, sparks fly.

The Back Door Affair by Bluesky
Napoleon is a voyeur, Illya his unwitting target. I love how Illya is seen through his eyes - sexy and sensual and full of masculine grace. Illya's masturbation scenes were eye-opening, to say the least. The premise is light as a feather, and a lot of fun.

Initiation to Innocence by Jane Terry and Psmythe
An unusual premise that works extremely well - this is a slash story within the context of friendship. Napoleon discovers Illya has a sexual problem, and is determined to help him. He throws women at Illya without success (some rebound right into his arms - there's implied NS/f). When they are trapped on a deserted island, Napoleon takes the opportunity to give Illya one-on-one lessons.

The Post Gurnius Affair and The Games People Play by Rosemary Callahan
Napoleon has physical and emotional scars after Gurnius (Illya impersonates this neo-Nazi Thrushie and tortures Napoleon with electric shocks - the story fills you in, so don't worry if you haven't seen the ep). Illya is guilt-ridden, but hits upon a solution that goes horribly wrong...or right, if you're a slash fan. The sequel explores the new relationship dynamic a few months later. There is one more story in the trilogy which I hope goes online soon, but you don't need to read it to enjoy the scenarios. It's so nice to have Napoleon as the needy one for a change - I got a kick out of seeing him suffer.

Passing the Time by Di T
A wickedly funny and slashy interlude that captures the banter, rivalry and developing friendship between Napoleon and Illya. The premise: Midway through the events of Shark, Napoleon and Illya are imprisoned in a cabin aboard a cruise liner. Bored and frustrated, they start talking - and the conversation turns to the recreational activities that occur between Russian seamen stuck in submarines. Illya's sly mischief is refreshing and so in-character. The way Napoleon seeks his assistance in a 're-enactment' is hilarious and sizzling. Don't worry if you haven't seen this episode - the characters are so engaging that they fill you in while you read.

The Flower Power Affair by Sensine
This story gleefully embraces the 'undercover-as-a-gay-couple' theme, and livens it up with an entertaining cast of hippy youngsters, mind-altering drugs galore, Illya's hilarious attempts at beat poetry, and cheeky banter between the two agents. Poor Napoleon, accustomed to tuxedos and martinis, is the fish out of water as he grapples with Illya's bisexuality, their too-cosy sleeping arrangements, the absence of cufflinks and ties in his new wardrobe, and the preparations required to make chicken salad. Not to mention a Thrush plot to brainwash young people and an annoying rival for Illya's affections.

Marriage of Convenience by Taliesin
One of the most sizzling non-con stories I have ever read. The set-up is simple enough: convinced that Napoleon's dalliances are a threat to U.N.C.L.E., Waverly forcibly restricts Napoleon to a sex partner within the organisation - Illya. Napoleon is disgusted at the idea and only seeks Illya out of desperation for release. Illya's sympathy for his partner turns into anger when he finds himself being used as an object. Characterisation is AU-ish: the Napoleon in this story is more cruel and remote than canon. Some may wonder if Illya would even agree to the arrangement in the first place. And would Waverly really force his top agents into such a situation? Perhaps not, but I didn't mind. To me, the set-up was what made Illya's 'fightback' all the more wonderful. Go, Illya! Go go go!! Taliesin has written several other sizzling short oneshots - this is my favourite.

Window by Katya Baturinsky
A beautiful little portrait of Illya as observed by an old Russian woman living in his apartment block. Through her sharp eyes, we see him first arrive, the attention he attracts, as well as some of the trials of being an U.N.C.L.E. agent. The setting is so vividly realised, from the cigarettes to the music to the news on the radio - reading this is as good as being there in person. The revelation in the final scene is perfect.

The Good Cop and Crossing Boundaries by T. Gabrielle
A series of established relationship fics with a spiky twist. The NS and IK here are unique - prickly and contrary, they shield their hearts from each other (and themselves) with cutting banter and sardonic remarks. It's up to the reader to read between the lines, because the characters do not make it easy for us. They sing and laugh and have sex, but there's a constant undercurrent of wary tension and underlying distrust which gives the stories a startling unpredictability. T. Gabrielle is unique in that she presents the characters, warts and all - she does not romanticise them or polish them up. These characters drive each other nuts as easily as they turn each other on.

Needs by Jane Terry
Slow-burning NS-angst fic. Napoleon grapples with m/m bondage fantasies after a torture session while Illya is away. The portrayal of April Dancer is quite sweet and touching, but it's the scenes with Illya - awkward and tender and unexpectedly moving - that makes the story special.

The Double Exposure Affair by Veronica
A pleasant change from bang-bang action-adventure. Illya is angsting in the lab when Napoleon interrupts...but wait! This short story manages to turn the reader's view of NS on its head *and* give a slashy twist to a certain photograph.

Do Blonds Really Have More Fun? by BT
A crossover with From Eroica With Love, believe it or not. Illya gets more than friendly with a certain blond thief. Poor NS is stuck playing tennis. For Illya fans...and maybe Eroica fans too. Is he really such a slut?

The Key by Ariadne
Napoleon and Illya have to bring down a Thrush operative. There's just one catch. He's an ex-UNCLE agent who Napoleon once idolised...and loved! Action, angst and tension galore as Illya questions Napoleon's state of mind, while wondering what to do about his own growing feelings. All the characters act *in* character, there are no annoying minor characters that hog story time, there are no painful separations and major injuries (heavily overused plot devices), and the bang-bang action plays a crucial part in the relationship plot. Most important of all, the angst is internal. It's character-generated, not plonked down by Thrush.

The Locust Affair by RAC
Illya and Mike Donfield!! No, no, noooo! The idea staggered me, because I could have sworn Napoleon and Mike had way more interaction. Napoleon has to face up to his feelings, deal with Illya's irritation and interest (he almosts comes on to Napoleon!). Then, dammit, the bang-bang action and h/c scenario takes over. But, hey, h/c fans will have a field day. The wonderful character banter and the hints of sizzling tension kept me reading to the end, but the minor characters were so, so annoying. Where's my Special??

Liaison by Lee the T
Napoleon has to face up to his feelings after he overhears Illya getting it on with a male informer. I had trouble believing this; I guess Illya must have been desperate (this informer is very, very smarmy). Napoleon angst, Illya angst when he finds out NS knows, and then the bang-bang action prolongs the sexual tension. The great banter, a tense Illya and Napoleon's brooding edginess is what makes it memorable. Downside: I did wish the informer dead. The reference to him at the end annoyed me greatly. He was a plot device, and deserved to die.

Anything (slash version) by Lee the T
Illya is presumed dead in a suspicious hotel fire. A devastated Napoleon loses his will to work for UNCLE as he wrestles with grief and guilt. Cue major angst. But all is not as it seems. A mysterious stranger offers Napoleon the chance to get Illya back...but at what cost to himself? This story is a fine example of action-adventure slash: a suspenseful action plot is welded to an absorbing and gripping emotional journey. For the curious, check out the gen version of Anything--an example of the integration between gen and slash genres that occurs often in MfU fandom.

Fair Trade by T. Kyle
Pure, unadulterated Napoleon angst as he embarks on an affair with a cool Illya who doesn't trust him one bit. An intriguing look inside their minds, although the end is a bit rushed as Illya reveals his vulnerable side thanks to a Thrush drug. (A kink of mine: drugs are good!) This Napoleon is a sweetie, he's a bit of a heartbreaker on the outside, but he's cuddly on the inside. And Illya's coldness conceals...well, you'll see. I have a soft spot for T.Kyle; reading her fic helped me to get a better grasp of NS.

Remember When by T. Kyle
An alternative take on Nowhere Affair. Napoleon has amnesia, and Thrush decide to restore his memory by arousing his libido. But instead of a blonde Thrush scientist, picture one very annoyed blond UNCLE agent! Great fun, especially with the snarky dialogue between Illya and Napoleon in a Thrush cell.

The Case of the Missing Spy Affair by Aithine and Veronica
This is a slashy terminally unfinished story, but still worth a read just for the loving details about Napoleon and his mannerisms in Act 1, all from the POV of a cynical Illya. The set-up is AU intriguing: in the 1940s, a Russian detective gets caught up with a charming American playboy. Plenty of quips and film noir references for movie fans.

The Fusion Affair by Dorinda
Lovely tight Napoleon 3rd person slashfic. Napoleon muses over his new partner with a delightful droll humour, first seeing him as a ball and chain, then a robot, and then...something much more. Wait for the scene of Illya alone in the lab, for there is some gorgeous imagery. Fierce Illya, as Napoleon describes him. And it's not so much in what he says as how he moves, the certainty of his actions. It's very apt. How could Napoleon resist?

Two Masters by Emily Veinglory
First person Illya slashfic. Veinglory uses this intriguing Old World syntax and vocabulary, and it does take a while to get used to it. But I think this stylistic convention works. This Illya is more foreign and more Russian. He's not guilty about his origins, he has no desire to defect...he deals with his mixed loyalties with a calm fatalism that is very much in character. Sex is implied, not depicted.

Twisted Ties Affair by Veronica
An angsty post Nowhere Affair slashfic. Napoleon is with Mara, the woman of his dreams. But he gets the niggling feeling that something's not quite right. As well he should. A love triangle in which everyone remains dignified. Napoleon is genuinely sympathetic throughout it all.

Two Hawks, Dancing by Debra Hicks
Napoleon is in a catatonic state after being captured by Thrush, so Illya takes him to a remote cabin to make him better. Tender h/c slash. Watch as Illya switches from gentle carer to aggressive defender. A fine example of 'fierce' Illya.

A Little Darkness by Jackie Thomas
Pre-UNCLE AU set in an American college. Napoleon comes to the rescue of a Russian student who faces bullies, and they form a close friendship. A slow-burning slash story with Illya h/c, a very nice Napoleon (yes, yes, yes) and some lovely imagery. (Recced to me by Raietta)

Venus Wanting and Once More With Feeling by Jane Fairfax
Lashings of sex and angst galore as Napoleon falls in lust/love with Illya. Illya doesn't think it will last, but Napoleon is determined to change Illya's mind. Who will win? These aren't the characters as I see them, but it is a compelling read.

Becalmed by Jane Fairfax
Romance at sea as Napoleon propositions a skittish Illya while sailing on the Pursang. Illya's as insecure as ever, but Napoleon is more the suave and charming suitor.

To Live in Interesting Times by Taliesin
A modern day AU, with strong 'La Femme Nikita' overtones according to Aris. Dark and angsty and vividly realised, with a bittersweet ending that lingers long after. Those expecting banter and humour will be in for a shock. The characters are virtually unrecognisable: Illya has this persistent rat-in-a-cage mentality; Napoleon is the enigma he comes to love.

Family Affair by Taliesin
A must read for the sizzling mirror sex scene. Taliesin writes such hot visceral sex scenes, and this is one of her most memorable ones. I can forgive the action-adventure premise and the idea that anyone would believe NS and IK are brothers and Waverly is dad...just wait for that sex scene!! And while I'm at it, I'll rec Casbah Redux as well--IK is more helpless than I like him, and the candles made me wonder, but the sex, the sex!

The Plausible Deniability Affair by Sue Castle (formerly Brenda Antrim)
One of the first MfU slashfics online, and it captures the breezy banter and easygoing charm of the show to a T. Napoleon and Illya indulge in some risque behaviour after a Thrush drug lowers their inhibitions.

Dust, Ashes and Camera Obscura by Kitty Fisher
Three stories, all slash, and all wonderful. Chilling vampire horror in Dust, as Thrush experiment on Illya and Napoleon struggles to cope with the consequences. The sequel, Ashes, should be read straight after. Bittersweet angst, with a moving resolution. Camera Obscura is a standalone PWP that features Illya wearing nothing but a silk black and scarlet sash. What more could you want?

Man With a Gun by Nataliya
Short, but very cute and telling. Napoleon muses on Illya's dangerous appeal. There's much more to him than mere good looks.

The Reese's Affair by Loretta Ross
A delightful gen story. Watch Napoleon and Illya eat this peanut butter American candy thingy. Way more fun than a character profile. It's them, through and through.

The Love Affair by Loretta Ross
Another fine gen fic. On Valentine's Day, Illya matchmakes old friends. Across town, Napoleon discovers he has made dates with two women at the same restaurant! The ensuing exchanges via pen communicator sparkle with wit. Napoleon's incorrigible charm won me over completely. It is impossible to be irritated with someone so shameless and good-humoured about his romantic escapades. As for Illya, his wit is intact, along with the detached coolness.

The Perfect Escape by Raietta
Funny, cute, gen...but too short! Napoleon and Illya have an earnest discussion about how to get out of a Thrush jail.

Menage a Trois by Blondie
A parody of Mary-Sue fic with a nice slashy twist. If you're put off by m/m/f, don't worry. Napoleon's manipulative games set everything right.

Acts of Sabotage by Blondie
Illya's apartment is burnt down, so he moves in with Napoleon and starts ruining all his dates! Funny and sweet, with a smidgin of IK angst. I wished Illya had been less repentant about his actions. I was cheering him all the way.

The Naked Truth by Blondie
Drugged sex!! Kink, kink, kink! Napoleon is given a Thrush truth serum, and falls in lust with his partner--what more could any reader want? Illya's matter-of-fact attitude as he struggles with an ardent Napoleon is laugh-out-loud funny, and Victor Marton is vividly brought to life in all of his smug oiliness. There's a little angst the day after...but true love and truth serum win out in the end.

Winter Wonderland by Nyssa
Nyssa writes angst and, I must confess, sometimes it's too bitter for me. If you adore angst, I (and many other rec sites) recommend her stories on File 40. I'm reccing this slashfic because there's humour, sweetness with Napoleon making snowcones...along with IK angst and insecurity. Napoleon and Illya are in an established relationship of sorts, but have much to negotiate.

The St. Christopher Affair by C W Walker
The St. Crispin's universe has been widely praised as setting the bar for genfic. This is a good taste for the curious. Napoleon and Illya have a microfilm that could change the course of a civil war. However, when they save the inhabitants of a mission church from ruthless guerillas they are obliged to take a priest, two nuns, and sixteen children through treacherous jungle to reach safety. An engrossing mix of fast-paced espionage with a cast of likable innocents, and some insights into the mind of an UNCLE agent.

Seat Partner by C W Walker
Another tense St. Crispin's universe story, featuring Illya working solo. The portrayal of Illya is what makes this memorable: the hint of kindness that lurks beneath his detached, almost calculating facade. Confession: the scene where he brazenly faces the Thrush agent in the stairwell made such a big impression on me that I used a similar set-up in Friendly Fire. The difference between the goodies and baddies isn't as clear-cut as we'd like to think.

Wicked by Cord Smithee
Sizzling hot IK/f, IK/NS story. I love Illya's predatory hint as he toys with the woman from Fiddlesticks and asks her about Napoleon's bedroom habits - it cleverly establishes the gulf between agents and innocents. The second sex scene between Napoleon and Illya is very hot as well...but the first scene with the female was eye-opening for me. Look, clitoris CAN be a sexy word!

Only Optimists by Viviana
This story uses the episode "Shark Affair" as a basis to explore the relationship dynamic between Napoleon and Illya. Scenes from the episode are recreated with impressive precision and expanded upon with generous dollops of banter, hurt/comfort, suspense and character-driven drama that was only hinted at in the script. In first-person present tense, we are easily drawn into Illya's mindset as a young agent harbouring a crush on his partner. Through his eyes, we see the many facets of Napoleon Solo: his charm, his skill as a bartender, his unflappable humour, his steely determination...and his capacity for empathy and forgiveness under duress.

The Back Door Affair by Bluesky
While exploring an abandoned dumbwaiter in his penthouse apartment, Napoleon discovers he can observe Illya living a few floors below. Innocent curiosity about his partner's reclusive habits leads to obsessive voyeurism as Napoleon finds himself saddened by Illya's isolation, and aroused by Illya's energetic masturbation sessions. He begins to wonder if Illya could use a little help...while Illya becomes increasingly suspicious about the strange noises coming from behind the walls. Naughty and nice.

La Famiglia Affair by Linda Cornett
This wonderful gen tale describes U.N.C.L.E. through the eyes of Leo, the proprietor of a new Italian restaurant situated across the street from Del Floria's tailor shop. He welcomes the reader in like an old friend, offers us food and drink, and through a series of conversations provides a most entertaining take on the customers he meets: 'Romeo Romano' with a new date each night, his runty friend with the wedding ring and a healthy appetite, and 'Capo Del Floria,' the old guy with the posh voice. When business turns bad after he refuses to sell out to a 'Frog' and a suspicious dame, Leo decides to take the initiative and ask the Del Floria 'mob' for help.

Poker Night by Viviana
Illya's night of innovative off-Broadway theatre is rudely interrupted by Mr. Waverly...and to make things worse, he's after Napoleon. Illya has the unenviable task of interrupting Napoleon's glamorous night of high-stakes poker at the rich end of town. When they discover Waverly only wanted Napoleon for a late-night briefing, they are left disgruntled at their ruined plans for the evening. Bickering ensues...and the start of an intriguing challenge. A deceptively simple story cut into sparkling brilliance by first-rate characterisation.

Finders Keepers by Taliesin
Napoleon's charm, patience, and good humour is tested when he tries to find his way back to Illya and U.N.C.L.E HQ during one hectic night in New York City. Thrush agents want him and the secret codes he's stolen from them, a pretty damsel eagerly offers a change of clothes and her affections for the night...and the men at the gay bathhouse are all too ready to welcome him with open arms and various other appendages. But never fear - the ever-dependable Illya is in hot pursuit. And tonight he's determined to get his man in more ways than one. A crazy, witty and sexy farce from start to finish.

The Moon and the Stars and the Deep Blue Sea Affair by Deanna
Ordered on vacation by Mr. Waverly to rest and recuperate, Illya and Napoleon find themselves sharing a hotel room on the French Riviera courtesy of the UNCLE secretarial pool. Napoleon can barely hide his enthusiasm; Illya's shock settles into simmering annoyance. But never fear: sightseeing, candlelit dinners, an action-packed night at the casino, and a winding drive along seaside cliffs in the moonlight have a way of melting the most ingrained Russian inhibitions. Unashamedly romantic, bubbly fun.

Such Friendly People/Partners by Linda Cornett
An entertaining and incisive gen take on the U.N.C.L.E. universe from the viewpoint of a female agent. She and Napoleon are posing as a swinging jetset couple on vacation, while Illya accompanies them as back-up. Surely every fan's dream...or is it? Napoleon is charming and flirtatious yet doesn't trust her with the nitty-gritty espionage work, but he's a welcome relief to Illya's impenetrable aloofness. However, an embarrassing mix-up results in Illya being mistaken for the 'husband.' Is Illya capable of swinging? Readers worried about Mary Sue traits should relax - Bev proves to be a character with wit and insight, but not annoyingly so. Her observations about being a female in a male-dominated profession has resonance today, and her gradual awareness of Illya's considerable appeal will be heartening to the Illya fans out there. The depiction of the friendship between Napoleon and Illya is an added bonus - though it's not the main theme, it's a reassuring anchor to canon.

BA - Blackadder

Yule Log by M. Fae Glasgow
PDF file from Oblique Publications. Very much in the sarcastic style of the show, except for the fact that Baldrick *does* have cunning. Poor Blackadder is scared of spirits and needs a good rogering.

After the Push by Dayjob
It's the Big Push, and Blackadder's life is on the line. Help and affection comes from a most unlikely source. The sharp humour that made the show funny is present, but it has a desperate undertone in the context of war. Unexpectedly moving.

Private Passions by clamchowder
Hilarious Blackadder/George dialogue piece. Their voices are *so* much like canon that I could almost hear the actors say these lines! George admits to having a homosexual crush, then feels so guilty he tries to shoot his head off. Thankfully, Edmund thinks of a way to use it to his advantage.

TB/X - Tokyo Babylon/X

Kiss or Kill by Yumemisama
My all-time favourite TB story. I couldn't make any sense of the ending of TB, let alone the bizarre events of X. Huh? Well, this story discards X, and makes sense of TB. As far as I'm concerned, this is what *should* have happened. A furious Subaru meets up with Seishirou in the after-life, and Hokuto is still playing her crazy matchmaking games.

Aite by Jessi Albano - 404
Seriously hot sex, and a Subaru who is more than a match for the Sakurazukamori! Seishirou pays Subaru a visit in his apartment, and finds that his prey has become a predator. Biting, thoughts of mutilation...this is dark and angsty stuff. This story is full of lovely moments that encapsulate the hatred and love that bind these two. Ignore the references to it being part 1 of a trilogy; it's complete in itself.

White Hands by Leareth
The tables are turned as Seishirou is hunted by a possessed Subaru. A bit of a shame it wasn't the real Subaru, but the entire scenario surrounding the exorcism and subsequent possession is perfectly plausible in CLAMP's magical Tokyo. Wait for the lovely bittersweet ending, as Seishirou's motivations are revealed as well as the twisted love behind it.

Yume by Flamebyrd
A cute string of alternate realities, all spinning off from the Subaru/Seishirou story. Some are sad, others are hilarious. Some make you think about what might have been. It can't be any more weird than the official storyline.

Fortunetelling by Mer
A cynical Subaru whiles away time getting his fortune read by a certain Card Mistress. It's a fascinating collision of two very different CLAMP storylines. Much talk of destiny and revenge and dealing with an unresolved future. A gen vignette.

Dance Under a Dark Moon by Aishuu and Xandra
During the X timeline, Seishirou visits Subaru to celebrate his birthday...and brings back a torrent of painful memories. I usually find flashbacks annoying, but this vividly brings to life the humour and warmth and frisson of sexual awakening hinted in the TB manga...before it was cruelly ripped to shreds. In Chapter Two, Seishirou offers Subaru the sexual intimacy he craves...but with a catch. This story is so CLAMP-like in its twists of mood I wasn't sure whether to applaud or boo at the ending ~_^ Read and mourn over what might have been.

The Other Side of Destiny (also available here) by Xandra and MidorinoMizu
Another X timeline fic. Subaru wants to understand Seishirou's thinking, so Seishirou obliges with a series of challenges cruel and sensual. There is an extended sex scene that sizzles with adversarial tension and shifting roles, with Subaru trapped between his desire for mastery over Seishirou and the demand for physical release. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. I adore sex scenes that illustrate complex relationship dynamics like this one. The ending is almost anti-climatic by comparison...which may be deliberate. Rainbow Bridge, anyone?

Stop The Tears From Falling by Murasaki2
A short angsty TB vignette. After a difficult job, Subaru goes to Seishirou's apartment for comfort. The metaphors linking sex and violence give the sex scenes a startling, hard-edged intensity.

YnM - Yami no Matsuei

The Bargain by the Bonne-Von Project
Sizzling hot sex as Tsuzuki makes a deal with Muraki. Bondage with ribbons, Tsuzuki overwhelmed by pleasure, and Muraki openly admiring the response of his new puppet...I am in awe. This story pushes all the non-con buttons I have. An amazing PWP.

Glass Eyes by Leareth
Dark non-con sex as we look at Muraki's bedroom through the eyes of his favorite doll, Veronica. Voyeuristic, creepy, sinister...and hot.

Sympathy for the Devil by Sephy
TsuzukixHisoka, featuring a Tsuzuki who is *NOT* a wimp! He has an undercurrent of seductive menace here, as he's possessed by the demon Sagadalius. Hisoka has to battle wits not only with the devil, but himself. Lovely long sex scene. (Takes place during the Demon's Trill arc)

To Be Yours by Madam Hydra
This story is set way before the YnM series, and examines how Tsuzuki found Touda (in human form) and saved him from imprisonment. It does a brilliant job of capturing the feel of the series, veering from humour to moody introspection. There's no Muraki, Hisoka, Tatsumi...and it doesn't matter because Touda's brooding insight into Tsuzuki's true nature and abilities is most compelling. Some lovely Tsuzuki+Touda overtones.

A High Price by Lizard
A solid MurakixTsuzuki story that starts off with an impressive bang. Muraki has kidnapped Tsuzuki, and the entire YnM gang (Hisoka, Watari, Tatsumi and the Gushoshin) are on the trail. There's good characterisation of support players, some very nice non-con sex...and then comes the angst! Tsuzuki is assailed by guilt, Muraki wants more, and Tatsumi gets very, very jealous. (Hisoka gets sidelined amid all this.) Unfortunately, I did have trouble accepting that Tsuzuki would fall as easily as he did. His capitulation struck me as too quick, too easy. However, there are good MuxTsu sex scenes...and despite my reservations about Tsuzuki's character, I still ended up enjoying the scenario overall (as did Muraki!).

A Flush in Hearts by Amy the Evitable
An introspective Tsuzuki vignette set during the King of Swords arc that sizzles with MuxTsu UST. I adore how it managed to tie in Tsuzuki's fear of his own powers to his attraction/revulsion for Muraki. And best of all, Tsuzuki is NOT portrayed as a helpless victim! Although there is no payoff (i.e. hot sex) the insights into Tsuzuki's mind are brilliant and extremely thought-provoking. Never mind the notes about it being a prelude to a bigger story. It works beautifully as it stands.

Burn Me by Ariss Tenoh
A TsuzukixTouda piece with tantalising hints of Tsuzuki's dark side, and a reference to a past encounter with Muraki that left me salivating for more. *sob* Masterful, predatory Tsuzuki...I love it. A fascinating exploration of the many facets of Tsuzuki's character, and the depths of loyalty he inspires in his shikigami.

Heaven's Drive by Kaz Misaki
Tsuzuki dreams of Muraki coming to his bed...or does he? A PWP with some deliciously sizzling sex. My only quibble is that Tsuzuki's characterisation seems uneven: he starts out weeping at his weakness before actively participating in the sex. I wished his internal thought processes were clearer. Thankfully Muraki is as greedy and possessive and oral-fixated as ever.

What Price for Peace? by Demonprist
An excellent introspective Hisoka vignette. It's a welcome change from the angst or angry impatience that canon dumps him with. Here he's matured enough to bury the demons of the past and recognise the thin line that separates victims and perpetrators (hints of Tsu+His).

Without a Shadow of a Doubt by Rinoa Redcloak
It's the third part of a trilogy involving a Tat/Tsu/His threesome, but you don't have to know too much of the previous parts to enjoy it. Tatsumi takes Hisoka to a cabin, they talk...then Tatsumi's playful streak takes over. I loved the games he plays with Hisoka's burning fingers (it's okay! He's a Shinigami!), the biting, the teasing commands...who ever knew Tatsumi had it in him?? (TatxHis).

The Cake Commitment (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Sugar Daddy Madman) by Literary Eagle
I love the title: it speaks for itself. Tsuzuki, Muraki, and a sale on wedding cakes. Silly, fluffy (think of the Mu/Tsu dream sequence before the Castle of Candles arc), and it makes a nice prequel to the next story...

Mid-Life-Crisis by koraseru
This story has no lemon, dammit! It hints at much sex, but we see nothing!! However, it's so bizarrely funny with its hints of MurakixTsuzuki and TatsumixTsuzuki. The premise: Tsuzuki is married to Muraki and continues to work *very* closely with Tatsumi. Muraki is troubled by Tsuzuki's tiredness and after discussing the issue with a jealous Oriya (their snarky exchange is hilarious), he allows Tsuzuki to keep a certain fire-snake as a pet. Much absurdity ensues.

A Little Visit by Amethyst Hunter
A het lemon, and a Muraki fangirl's dream. A lovestruck Tsubaki sneaks into Muraki's bedroom (set during the King of Swords arc) and gets to watch and later fondle a sleeping Muraki. The kink value lies in having the tables turned: Muraki is now the semi-conscious doll (a little suspension of disbelief is required, yes, but the smut is worth it), and Tsubaki is able to toy with him to her heart's content. Wonderful sensual details, and much irony as Tsubaki indulges in romantic fantasies about her beloved sensei.

In Your Arms, This Lonely Place by Rana Eros
A beautifully described Tatsumi/Hisoka piece set during Kyoto arc. Shadows surround Tatsumi as he muses on why Hisoka comes to him, angsts about what Tsuzuki must think, and attempts to control the depth of his own hunger. It's very cool and controlled and polite, with much simmering tension lurking beneath the surface.

Five Years in Five Days by Rina K Fenderson
Aged-up Hisoka!! Thanks to Watari's potion, Hisoka is now 21 (US age of consent; it's only 18 here in Australia), and Tsuzuki decides to act on his long-suppressed feelings. I really like the playful teasing between the two, especially during the sex scenes. Such a welcome change to read about a non-grumpy Hisoka and a confident Tsuzuki who knows how to flirt. Awww! Just mind the odd grammatical error.

Family Heirloom and Who Will Love You? by Teno Hikari
There's much more to Tsuzuki than the cute fluffy puppy act. There is a repressed 'darkness' inside him, a side that revels in violence and bloodshed. In this story, we're given a glimpse of this other Tsuzuki. He's the 'family heirloom' of the story, handed down from father to son within the Muraki family. Young Kazutaka is entranced by him from their first meeting. From his viewpoint, we see how his fascination develops into obsessive desire. "Who Will Love You?" is brief and incomplete, but I love its insights into Tsuzuki's past and state of mind as he watches Kazutaka grow up.

Colour Me Blue by Breze
An introspective piece that explores the underlying angst of the Tatsumi/Tsuzuki/Hisoka triangle. From Hisoka's viewpoint, we see how he becomes attached to Tsuzuki, and his guilt about coming between Tatsumi and Tsuzuki. When the events of Kyoto make him doubt his ability to help Tsuzuki, he finds comfort and reassurance from a most unlikely source. Deftly written and sharply observed, it's a sad and beautiful story.

Monsters Under the Bed by katalyst
It's an elegant two-part story with a very dark and twisted take on Tsuzuki/Hisoka. First we're given Tsuzuki's take on their relationship, rich with his trademark self-loathing and insecurity. Then we're given Hisoka's view, and it becomes painfully clear that Hisoka has his own reasons for staying with Tsuzuki. Co-dependent in their need and pain, they each get what they can from the other. It's not pretty, but it is compelling.

Those Who Wait by Naga [use IE to view]
A tense, moving and vivid account of the Kyoto arc finale from the viewpoint of Tsuzuki's shikigami. Suzaku is beside herself with worry, Byakko is confused and upset...and Touda looks on, seemingly indifferent to his master's plight...or is he? Amazing details of how shikigami transform into their true form, Tsuzuki's agonised state of mind as he summons Touda, and Touda's sympathy to his plight. The shikigami are fleshed out in exquisite detail. This story pack an incredible emotional punch. A must-read.

The Sugar Project by Icka! M. Chif
Cute fluff with a hint of Tsu/His and Tat/Wat. Watari investigates the theory that sugar intake is linked to power output by conducting a series of experiments on his fellow Shinigami. Written as a lab report, its pseudo-scientific tone can't conceal the ensuing silliness and mayhem that results...or Watari's own mischievous streak. Luck-y!

Two People on Opposite Sides of the River by E. Liddell
An engrossing Mu/Tsu (with a Mu/Tsu/Or threesome!) story that cleverly juggles angst, romance, action and horror. During a case, Tsuzuki develops amnesia and is found in a river by Muraki. Fascinated by Tsuzuki's ignorance of their violent and bloody past, Muraki tries to make 'amends' before the Shinigami find him and Tsuzuki regains his memory. However, there is a demon after Tsuzuki, and it will stop at nothing to get its prey. There is a switching pov device that irked me at first, but it does become extremely useful later on in understanding the motivations of the characters. And believe it or not, Hisoka doesn't get shunted aside. He does play an integral part of the story. Tatsumi fans may feel short-changed though.

Portrait of the Empath as an Involuntary Voyeur by Phoebe
An intriguing Hisoka vignette about the Mu/Tsu vibes during King of Swords. Hisoka is a lot more detached and droll than usual, and there's some very unique (some might consider OOC) insights into his thoughts about the pairing.

In the Ashes of Jericho by Vain
A beautiful, reflective - and unfinished - Oriya/Hisoka WIP. There are some lovely insights into Hisoka's mind as he dwells on why he visits Kokakuroa, and Oriya's own enigmatic appeal. Hisoka's a fascinating mix of child and adult, stubborn yet vulnerable. The first two parts are complete in themselves: the third part hints at Tsuzuki angst and a further storyline which has yet to be continued. A confession: this fic was a major inspiration for the set-up of Umbral Embrace.

The Metamorphosis of Narcissus by Nightspore
Grotesque, gory, and creepy beyond belief. Muraki vivisects, devours and fucks a catatonic Tsuzuki. In Muraki's mind, we see the scientific and hedonistic together in jarring combination. As for the end result...you'll have to read for yourself.

Love in a Teacup by Kohaku Tenshi
Fluffy and funny Tatsumi/Hisoka fic. Watari gives Hisoka a truth potion which makes it impossible for him to lie. Tatsumi offers to protect him from the nosy antics of Tsuzuki and Watari...but discovers a few revelations of his own.

Seduction by Lethargy - A Failed Attempt by Himoki
Hilarious in-character Muraki/Tsuzuki fic. The sizzle is slight, and overwhelmed by satire - it's an anti-lemon in lemon guise. Tsuzuki awakes from a drugged stupor to find himself tied to a bed, and Muraki attempting to feed him. Arguing, sex, and more arguing ensues. Angst-free.

Like This by Mistress Renet
Tatsumi/Hisoka fic written for the Yami Valentine LJ challenge. Tatsumi and Hisoka have to work together on a case after Tsuzuki is 'drained' by a succubus. Intriguing premise, good characterisation and a sizzling sex scene with an assertive Hisoka. Minor point: I can't see Tsuzuki being so oblivious to the new relationship (he's not that thick!) - but otherwise I enjoyed it very much.

The Art of War by Vain (ff.net link)
A love quadrangle (or should that be quadrilateral?) that doesn't *quite* work for me (I can't see Tsuzuki being unfaithful to Hisoka - if they got together, they'd stay together) but a fascinating premise anyway. The first part is from Hisoka's POV as he details his relationship with Tsuzuki and its breakdown when he catches him with Muraki. The second part then begins with Tatsumi's reflections and unrequited feelings for Hisoka, followed by their avoidance/confrontation of their feelings for each other. Vain does a brilliant job of getting into the heads of Hisoka and Tatsumi, writes hot voyeuristic Mu/Tsu...but the actual Tat/His scenes have more brittle angst and melodrama than sexual sizzle.

CCS - Cardcaptor Sakura

Frame: Pieces of Her Soul by Luriko-Ysabeth
An insight into Tomoyo's mind, and why she acts as she does. Normally, introspective pieces frustrate me but this is very wise, moving and sad. Are photographs a valid substitute for the real thing? Thought-provoking, with brilliant background details.

Wings by Sylvia
A gorgeous Touya/Yue PWP. If you have a kink for winged characters, then you must read this. Lovely details about feathers, skin and bone that bring fantasy to life. (Thanks to Aithine and Mer for rec.)

Sakura and the Pin that Dropped by Mer
Tomoyo finally makes the first move. View the hilarious reactions of Touya, Yukito and Kero. And poor Sakura.

Playing the Cards by Twig [scroll to find chapter links]
A mature Sakura is depressed and alone. The Cards want to help their mistress, but confusion reigns as they revert to their untrapped forms and bicker among themselves! Funny, sweet and sad. Features Tomoyo and Meiling in an established relationship, but wait for the tantalizing hint of Tomoyo/Sakura. (Thanks to Mer for the rec)

...and last, Hope and Family Affairs by Luriko-Ysabeth
These stories work as standalones, but I think the full effect is best appreciated when read together. Ever wondered if the Li family is as benevolent as they appear? Ever wondered what kind of mother would send her child to a strange country so he could get hold of the Clow Cards? These small stories hint at a darker side to the Li family, so it's probably not for Syaoran/Sakura fans. Intriguing background for those who can't buy CLAMP's conveniently happy ending to the series. (Thanks again to Mer)

If the Shoe Fits by Amazoness Duo
A very cute and charming story based on the Cinderella fairy tale. Sakura goes to a school dance and meets a mysterious boy...or does she? The depiction of minor characters is so spot-on that it's almost like watching the anime, and the Sakura+Tomoyo moments are too sweet for words. Shoujo-ai at its best.

Kero-chan's Newlywed Game by Yukito no Miko
Hilarious dialogue as Sakura & Tomoyo, Yukito and Touya, and--wait for it--Syaoran and Eriol are put through their paces by Kero-chan. Syaoran's growing horror and the ad breaks are the icing on the cake. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. If only CLAMP had seen the light... (check out the funny gift art on the main site too)

Wild Card by Allyn Yonge
A battle with a mysterious card goes wrong, and Sakura is dead...or is she? Tomoyo cannot believe it. The opening scenes capture the breezy feel of the show, and the later scenes capture the angst lurking beneath the surface. Although it is technically a deathfic, the ending has a twist that offers some hope for the future.

Just Once by Sparkle and Erica Friedman
A love triangle develops when Tomoyo acts on her feelings for Sakura. Engaged to Syaoran, Sakura is distressed over her infidelity, and guilt-ridden at her ignorance of her friend's true feelings. Tomoyo is equally guilt-ridden. Much angst ensues. This story explores an unusual premise, but as a Tomoyo/Sakura fan I found the Syaoran/Sakura bias too obvious for my taste. The ending is surprising - and controversial. If it was anyone but Sakura in the middle, I wouldn't believe it. Well-written and thought provoking, even if it's not the characters as I see them.

Duklyon - Campus Cop Duklyon
This crazy manga series defies description. Imagine if the relationship between Pepe Le Peu and the black cat was transposed onto two handsome students who have to defend CLAMP campus against evil. Hmm. The Manga Obsession have a better summary. And Tokyopop released English translations in Sept 2003.

Kenpi Muses by Icka! M. Chif
Hilarious 1st person vignette. Kentarou explains who he is, what he does...and the softer side to the cool Takeshi. The last line is simply brilliant.

It All Changes by Icka! M. Chif
Kentarou has to leave uni because of a family tragedy, and Duklyon is disbanded. Is it really the end?? There's sadness and joy, all done with a deft hand. The G-rated ending is just perfect. Awwww!

A Very Blurry Evening by Yumemisama
This was the story that made me buy the manga. I think it's the only time that a fanfic has sucked me into the source material. After their graduation party, Kentarou and Takeshi have a deep and meaningful conversation about themselves and their future thanks to a generous dose of spiked punch. Fascinating dialogue, funny situations...and the kind of ending that leaves you wanting more, but able to fill in the dots.

Trigun

Sweating Bullets by Tenshi
The best PWP lemons are never just about sex, as illustrated by this little gem. Vash digs bullets out of Wolfwood, then suddenly we're seeing Vash's mask of false cheer, his vulnerability and insecurity...and how brilliant he is at giving blowjobs. I could even hear them saying the dialogue. Very deftly done.

Quiet by Cassiel Kelner
Another nice Vash/Wolfwood lemon with a mischievous very-much-in-control Vash. Vash's metal arm is written for kink value...and it works!

Visible Scars by Andraste
Trigun PWP: Vash/Wolfwood fic. Very hot and visceral present tense piece. There's a flashback and a reversion to past tense that jarred me a little, but once the guys went down to business...*sigh*. The coarse language and gritty details capture the 'Wild West' feel of the series.

miscellaneous

In Perfect Silence by Erica Friedman
Noir: Mireille/Kirika fic. These characters say little - and this short story captures the emotion that underpins much of this visually gorgeous anime. Very sexy and restrained, just like them.

Black Turned Red by Kirika
Noir: Mireille/Kirika fic. Post series story (watch out for spoilers) that explores their developing relationship. The characterisation is spot-on: Mireille's teasing and slight air of superiority and Kirika's quiet directness is just like the show. Some sexy f/f scenes too.

Not Just Yet by miyamoto yui
Hikaru no Go: Ogata+Sai fic. Sad, introspective reflections as Ogata is haunted by dreams in which he trained a young Go player called Sai...or was it real? Spoilers for the series.

To Bury the Hurt of Memory by Talya Firedancer
Weiss Kreuz: Aya/Yohji fic. I wasn't impressed with the anime...but that's what fanfic like this is for. Yohji awakes from a car accident with amnesia, and has to reconstruct the past. He has many mysteries to sort out...including Aya's midnight appearances. Funny, sweet, sad, and tragic...the answers are all found at the end. Extremely rewarding. Now *this* is good angst.

What Dreams May Come by Meg
DN Angel PWP: Satoshi/Dark. This ficlet sizzles! From the first line, the reader is thrown into Hiwatari's mind as he fondles a helpless but willing Daisuke. There's arching and biting and blind need...I was blown away by the sheer intensity of it. Pure smut, beautifully done.

Submerged by Meg and Morning After by Sparkle
Fluffy DN Angel shounen-ai humour as Satoshi becomes drunk and needs to be tended by a bemused Daisuke. Very cute and sweet. The second story is a sequel that takes the scenario in a darker direction, with a welcome injection of canon angst, longing and unresolved desire.

My December by Meg (all chapters in reverse order here)
DN Angel: a multi-part introspective Sat/Dai story that blends angst and humour to great effect. Great insights into the bond between the two boys, and the secret that could tear them apart. Minor quibble: initial chapters are slow and reflective, while later chapters become a little confusing - the magical elements that come into play require knowledge of mythology/other fandoms, and are brushed over too quickly for my liking. But the Satoshi/Daisuke moments are wonderful, and more than make up for the plot issues.
